What Violent Crimes Do the FBI Track?

Even though the top priorities for the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) are national security threats, they continue to play a key role in combating violent crimes in big cities and local communities across the United States. According to the FBI, they concentrate on crime problems that pose major threats to American society.

Significant violent crimes the FBI concentrates on

Some of the most significant violent crimes the FBI tracks include mass killings, sniper murders, and serial killings. These are a major focus for the Bureau because they can paralyze entire communities and stretch state and local law enforcement resources to their limits. In situations where major violent crimes happen suddenly in a city or town, the FBI will often work with local law enforcement partners and state agencies to support the community.

Key threats tracked by the FBI

The Bureau has identified seven key threats as areas of concern including:

Gangs: with 33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs, and prison gangs criminally active in the US today, these groups are actively monitored by the FBI. Many gang members continue to commit crimes even after being sent to jail and there are critical anti-gang initiatives in place today being managed by the Bureau including the National Gang Intelligence Center and Violent Gang Task Forces.

Violent Crimes Against Children: the unthinkable happens every year and thousands of children in the US become victims of crimes. The mission of the FBI’s violent crimes against children program is to provide a rapid, proactive, and comprehensive ability to counter all threats of abuse and exploitation to children; identify, locate, and recover child victims, and strengthen relationships between the FBI and federal, state, local, tribal, and international law enforcement partners to identify, prioritize, investigate, and deter individuals and criminal networks exploiting children.

Human Trafficking: Anyone can be a victim of human trafficking (the illegal exploitation of a person), and it can occur in any U.S. community—cities, suburbs, and even rural areas. Because of this, the FBI works human trafficking cases under its Crimes Against Children and Human Trafficking program.

Other key threats identified and actively tracked by the FBI include Indian country crime, bank robbery, art crime, and jewelry and gem theft.
